pantai dasar sabak dalam kenangan #1

Kampung Pantai Dasar Sabak, formerly is one of the fishing villages in Kelantan. In 1986, for the first time I visited the place, because I interested in beauty of its fishing boats. To me, the fishing boats were something unique. As I stood on the beach, soft wind touched me, greeted me, as if celebrate my arrival. It just my feeling at that time.

I had seen a wide beach. This village was surrounded by coconut trees, waving of leaves and providing shady in yards. Peaceful and picturesque. I can remember, when afternoon some groups of children seen joyful playing on the beach. Some wives were awaiting homeward their husbands, brought sustenance from the sea. Hopefully getting a lot of fishes. God willing. These were partly of panoramas in Kampung Nelayan Pantai Dasar Sabak. Approximately hundred of families had lived here. Most of its men were working as fishermen while the others worked relate to process the source from sea. In the daylight the fishing boats ceaseless docked and elapsed. They rested at night. This village had also boat-makers. Some fishermen have skill recover their damaged boats.

This place in the past, I have seen, after fishing boats reaching up to the beach the fishermen lifted out the hauls from their boats. Fishmongers then would bargain for prices. Its women had diligence to perform a variety of productions based on seafood. Among of their produced were dried fishes, fishes preserved in brine, prawns paste, dried anchovies, dried squids, shrimps crackers, and fishes crackers. Mostly results were released for sale. Low prices. Sociable. Daily bustle between the fishermen and sea. The activities very lively. However, the coastal that very beautiful and peaceful before no longer exists.

Some reports were prior accepted from the surrounding area that is, several years later the strong waves hit the coast constantly. It resulted, there were occurred severe erosion on coast. Someone told, due to strong waves continually at least 150 meters toward inland have been eroded. The residents moved, looked for new safe shelters. A coastal once known as a beautiful fishery village, now is marine. The fishing village has now swapped to be the sea. The fishermen then moved to a new location named 'Pengkalan Nelayan Pulau Gajah'. They are using Pulau Gajah Fishing Jetty as their new base.

In mid of 2007, this beach has been built the embankment with made of rocks to against the waves that continuously erode. This project was funded by the government. Actually, Pengkalan Nelayan Pulau Gajah has been used earlier before the fort for wave barriers was built on Pantai Dasar Sabak.

Regarding the phenomena of coastal erosion, there are three causes which can be considered; first, the level of seas was increasing because the ice in the polar regions of earth more melted than the previous level; second, occurred soil sediment near or in several parts of the place; and third, the strong waves occurred continuously, as described in above. What needs to be stated is, while I came to the place I did not find anything to be worried concerning the waves, just accustomed waves, seemed the wont waves such as at the elsewhere, that is, as same as on the beaches of east coast in Malaysia Peninsular. So, maybe the land level of the area is low. If so, assumption about occurrence of coastal erosion is inappropriate, but the coastal submerged in water maybe is.

This painting is describing a fishing boat, which situated on Pantai Dasar Sabak. This fishing boat maybe a little damage. It must be repaired, or the crews were on holiday. See at body of the boat, as though the patterns were found in the Kelantan's Batik style. This boat is probably 25 feet in length and 6 feet in width. It was built by local skillful boat-makers. The materials for constructing the boat were obtained near the place, particularly on wood.
