freshwater: 'kelibat kelisa'


The common name for this fish is Arowana. The Arowana also known as “Dragon Fish” or “Bony-tongued Dragon” especially in some Chinese society. This name is also known and used in among the exporters and importers of ornamental fishes. It is one of the glamorous ornamental freshwater fishes. This fish is highly desired by the most enthusiasts of ornamental fishes. Asian Arowana species are more recognizable as Ikan Kelisa by the Malaysian Malays' community. While, some ethnics living in several districts in the Republic of Indonesia, this species well-known as Ikan Peyang, Ikan Tangkelesa, Ikan Kelesa, Ikan Siluk, Ikan Kahyangan, etc.

This is a classic ornamental fish and too special for its fans. It is caused, the species can be displaying its authenticity as the classic ornamental fish. All Arowanas seemed bony-headed and throughout the body covered with large scales as if mosaics pattern continuously. The dorsal and anal fins has relatively long and soft rays, while the pectoral and the ventral fins are minor. The name "Bony-tongue" refers to the bone at the bottom teeth in Arowana mouth, tongue which tight squeeze the teeth in the mouth palate. It is called the "Dragon Fish" as has a large number of large scales and has a pair of large antennas, resembles the Chinese's dragon.

Arowanas can get oxygen from the air by breath and suck into the swim bladder with wrinkled capillaries tissue such as the lungs. Arowanas are carnivorous-animal. They are good at jumping and often foraging nearby surfaces of water. Arowanas are always hunting their foods by snatching their prey when they are jumping passed over the water surface. Asian Arowanas feed on centipedes, cockroaches, crickets, small fishes, grasshoppers, small frogs and worms.

Several species of Arowanas have been showing they are fry care. They built nests and protected the young when the eggs have hatched. Some species are mouth brooders. The parents holding some hundreds of eggs in the mouths until the young have knowledge for selves-care. The young may make some tentative trips outside the parent's mouth. It is to investigate the surroundings before they leave their parents' mouth forever.

Arowanas are divided in ten species: three of South America, one of Africa, four of Asia and two of Australia. Ikan Kelisa Emas Malaysia (Malaysian Golden Arowana or Asian Bony-tongue; the name of scientific is Scleropages formosus). Ikan Kelisa Emas Indonesia (Indonesian Golden Arowana or Red-tailed Golden Arowana; the name of scientific is Scleropages aureus). Asian Arowanas can grow up to 90cm in length. Measurement of the length is calculated from the tip of the snout to the tip of the longer lobe of caudal fin.

Ikan Kelisa nowadays is threatened of extinction. This species is under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). The Malaysian Administration has prohibited catching or trading the Ikan Kelisa that obtained from the originating wildlife habitats, namely obtained from rivers, lakes, swamps or any nature water sources without permission from its wildlife department. Most Ikan Kelisa in aquariums are derived from Fishes Farming Central, that is, the propagation of fishes for sale and exported to other countries such as Japan and America.

Kelibat means "something is seen in a flash". Kelibat kelisa intended to "visible of the flashes is reflected by the Arowana's scales". Below is about painting.
