Kampung Pulau Gajah, Sabak in Kelantan. Actually, it is not in an island and is not the name to an island. It is in the part of Kelantan mainland. It is known as fishing jetty village.
Some ones told me that many years ago on the coastal of Pantai Dasar Sabak, where it was an origin of a fishery coastal had occurred extreme erosion by the strong waves. The fishermen cannot be longer docked there. They were perforce moved to new place. Pantai Dasar Sabak distance is less than 1 km from Pulau Gajah Fishing Jetty. The fishermen have had a strong reason to move to Pulau Gajah. There were several dozens of families in Pulau Gajah. Partly of them are working as fishermen and the other occupants work related processing the source from the sea.
Since 1986 I have interested in beauty of fishing boats here. They order the boats from boat-makers, they proposed that the boat would follow their own styles, that is, the traditional shaped. The fishermen here very diligent manage their boats. They have painted the boats with variegated. They chose the motifs which were considered as the great illustrations for their boats. Among the motifs would be related to the things of life around them such as elements and colors of fishes and plants. Wood carvings found at their boats were identical elements and shapes such as found at the Kelantan Malay houses. One of the boats really attracts me to make painting. Yes I have been doing. One of the fishermen told me, his fishing boat is one of the most important things for him and his family. His boat used solely to achieve sustenance from the sea. The sources from the sea must be sold. Those are the livelihoods for his family.
Baktiar from word bakti. Bakti means 'good-deeds'. Baktiar is intended to 'a person whom meritorious'. In that, also Baktiar is a nickname for the man who was given by his parents or his relatives. Information about the painting see below.
